The Journey Behind Beyond the Diagnosis Foundation, Inc.
Beyond the Diagnosis Foundation was born from resilience, compassion, and lived experience.
In 2020, founder Shalyn Cofer began navigating one of the most difficult seasons of her life. As a single mother, she was raising a young son who had just been diagnosed with Level 3 non-verbal autism. Her days were filled with therapy appointments, sleepless nights, uncertainty, and the emotional weight many families raising children with disabilities know all too well.
At the same time, Shalyn was pursuing her college education. Balancing caregiving responsibilities with coursework often felt impossible. There were semesters she had to withdraw, classes she failed, and moments where continuing her education seemed out of reach.
But she refused to give up.
Through faith, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to her son’s future, Shalyn continued forward. On May 9, 2025, she walked across the stage to receive her degree—an achievement that many once told her was impossible.
The very next day, something unexpected happened.
Shalyn had a vivid overnight dream that sparked the vision for what would soon become Beyond the Diagnosis Foundation, Inc. What began as a moment of inspiration quickly felt like a calling. With no nonprofit experience and not even knowing what the word “nonprofit” truly meant at the time, she began learning, researching, and building step by step.
She created Beyond the Diagnosis Foundation so that no mother walking a similar path would ever feel alone.
Founded in Lufkin, Texas, the organization is supported by a passionate board of mothers, advocates, and community leaders who believe families deserve more than just a diagnosis—they deserve support, opportunity, and community.
Today, the foundation works to provide inclusive events, educational scholarships, caregiver support, and community-based programs designed to uplift families raising children with disabilities.
What began as a vision inspired by one mother’s journey has grown into a registered nonprofit supported by community partners and families across East Texas.
And this is only the beginning.
Together, we are building a legacy of impact—one family at a time.
